The Beagle: America’s No. 4 choice for best puppy. This is a breed that has been in the top ten list for decades, and this little bundle of joy continues to win hearts and it doesn’t get much cuter to behold the face of a Beagle puppy. Probably the most famous of all Beagle’s that has crossed both cultures and languages is Snoopy who has become one of the most identifiable cartoon character in the world.

Going back to the 1950s, Snoopy has is about as famous as loved as any dog could get, and is more than an ambassador for the Beagle, but has crossed generations and cultural divides and it’s amazing how we identify with him as more than just a dog, but more like a human being.

The Beagle is loveable and adorable for its playful antics, but it goes without saying that you must be willing to commit to this fun-loving and often mischievous little pooch, and be ready for noise as this little guy loves to play and socialize.

History

  • His exact origin is unknown
  • It’s believed he came from pack hounds from England that existed before the time of the Romans
  • In the 1860’s dog’s from England were imported and were mixed with the Beagles of the time, to develop the Beagle we know today
  • He is a scent hound and was used for hunting rabbits and hares

Personality and Behavior

  • He’s even-tempered, friendly and gentle
  • He has a merry and amiable personality; he’s not aggressive
  • He has lots of stamina
  • He doesn’t drool or have a doggy odor
  • He is usually a little reserved with strangers but warms up to them fast!
  • He makes a good watchdog and will sound the warning alarm
  • He gets easily excited
  • He may ignore your orders because he is naturally independent and single minded
  • He’s easily distracted by smells and won’t listen to your calls to come back if finds an interesting scent to follow
  • He’s excellent with kids
  • He’s friendly with other dogs

Training

He’s one of the most difficult breeds to train. You will need lots of patience as he is one of the slowest to learn obedience commands.

Shedding

He sheds quite a bit of hair. You’ll find some hair stuck to your clothes, couch and carpets.

Grooming / Maintenance

His short coat only needs to be brushed occasionally. However, because it sheds you may find yourself brushing it once a week, or more, to minimize the hair in your home. (Full article available here)

The Beagle: America’s No. 4 choice for best puppy is a great choice for as a family pet as long as you are aware of their traits and disposition from the very beginning. There shouldn’t be any surprises in that you must be aware that this breed was bred as a hunting dog, and these instincts still remain strong within the domestic pet variety available today. Spending the time to train your Beagle will be time well spent, and being that they have a mind of their own will be displayed from the get go. As with any dog, the Beagle must be taught that you are the pack leader, and under no circumstances should you allow any behavior to the contrary. A great choice if you’re looking for a loveable, active, and comical breed of dog.

    • Hi Romy. Yes, the Beagle remains in the top 10 puppy of choice year after year. Very cute. As for training them, some people find it more difficult than others, but I think it’s more the challenge of getting them to comply with the house rules when they have a mind of their own. This, however, is a good trait as it shows their intelligence and personality.
